The Great Wildebeest Migration | The 8th Wonder of the World

The great wildebeest migration

Imagine a thundering wave of over two million animals, their hooves drumming a primal rhythm across the vast African savanna. This is the great wildebeest migration, a spectacle so breathtaking it’s often hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” It’s not a single event, but a continuous, 365 day’s journey, in the quest for survival driven by the ancient pulse of nature.

Where do wildebeest migrate to and from

The wildebeest migration is a transboundary odyssey, a relentless pursuit of fresh grazing that spans the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Thousands of wildebeests, alongside zebras, gazelles (Grant and Thomson’s gazelles) ,elands, and a small number of impalas traverse the plains between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve in search of green pasture. For eight months (November to June), they graze in Tanzania, then from July to October, they cross into Kenya’s lush grasslands. The wildebeest migrate in search for fresh, nutrient-rich grasses that spring up after seasonal downpours. This constant movement ensures their survival, allowing them to thrive in an ecosystem that fluctuates dramatically throughout the year.

The annual cycle of the wildebeest migration

December to March;  From December to March is the calving season and the herd is found in southern Serengeti and around Lake Ndutu in Ngorongoro conservation area.

April to May;  This is the rainy season in Tanzania and they move north to the plains of southern Serengeti.

June and July; is the mating season of the herd and they tend to be very noisy. In June, they move to the western side of Serengeti and cross the Grumeti River to reach the Singita Grumeti Reserve. The Grumeti River is not a continuous river hence this part of the crossing is not challenging for the heard.

July to October; This is the climax of the wildebeest migration Kenya, the dramatic crossing of the Mara River. It is also known as “the world cup of wildlife”. The herd starts heading to the north of the Serengeti getting ready to cross from Serengeti to The Mara. The sheer volume of animals creates a spectacle that’s both awe-inspiring and heart-wrenching. Aware of danger of prey lacking at the Mara River, the grazers cross at highspeed, making the dramatic catch more fascinating.

This period between  July to October is considered as the best time to visit Kenya for Safari, therefore a peak season. It’s advisable to book your trip early in advance to secure the best accommodation at the Mara. Masai Mara should definitely be your destination to get the best view of the migration because the herd is at its highest speed, in Kenya we call it the Kipchoge speed.

October to November; As the rains begin in the south, the herds turn back, completing their circular journey and preparing for the next calving season.
